“Every block of stone has a statue inside it and it is the task of the sculptor to discover it.”
-Michelangelo
As if you needed another reason to attend the ZBrush Summit this year, we have added a fun new challenge that ANYONE on-site can participate in! This year we are introducing The Michelangelo Challenge where artists are presented with a digital block of stone and tasked with creating a sculpt, paying homage to sculptors of the past.
Four workstations will be available and each artist will be given 15 minutes in which to sculpt.
Take advantage of the new Sculptris Pro feature in ZBrush 2018 to carve and chisel your way through digital clay in a quick, fun and artistic way. The winner will receive Ultimaker’s 3 Extended printer valued at $4,295! The challenge will run all three days of the ZBrush Summit at our Hollywood headquarters so come one, come all and show off your sculpting chops!
Michelangelo was limited to a block of stone but in the digital world the only limit is your imagination!
Watch the video above for an example sculpt so that you can understand exactly what the contest is looking for. The idea is not so much to add to the block but more to cut into it to reveal your creation. Then start practicing now by downloading the file that will be used at the 2018 ZBrush Summit during the challenge.
The following rules* apply to this challenge:
Winner will be chosen by a panel of judges.
Sculpt must be completed at the 2018 ZBrush Summit to qualify for the winning prize.
Sculpting can only to take place during the times below at the 2018 ZBrush Summit:
Friday: 12:00 pm - 6:20 pm
Saturday: 10:00 am - 6:00 pm
Sunday: 11:00 am - 2:25 pm
There is a time limit of 15 minutes per entry.
You must start from the ZBrush Michelangelo Challenge Project. Download Here.
During the contest in order to harness the power of Sculptris Pro you are only able to use brushes that have Sculptris Pro enabled**.
You are limited to only sculpting on the SubTool provided in the ZBrush Michelangelo Challenge Project file.
Models should not be PolyPainted or textured. Model should retain the same color and surface noise provided in the ZBrush Challenge Project.
You may sculpt anywhere on the Digital Stone but you must keep the base of the sculpt to show that the model was created out of a cube.
You may enter the contest more than once (restrictions apply based on availability).
Four sculpting machines will be available for entering. They are open once every 15 mins. First come, first served.
Absolutely no files can be installed on the machines.
Machines will not have internet access.
Pixologic Inc, Lenovo, Wacom and Ultimaker reserve the right to use all entries for promotional purposes.
Please feel free to experiment and post your very own sculpts in this thread. (only those attending the Summit are eligible to win the prize)
*Pixologic reserves the right to change these rules at any time without prior notice.

@NoeleoN: Nice one!
Here are a few quick test ones just playing around done in a more additive fashion (only a few minutes for each of these.) :)

Thanks, Jaime to encourage me to post it. This is an amazing idea! I'm very excited to do things like this~
It has been a very long time since my last post, but I'm glad to be back!
The exercice is really intresting! I'm not going to lie, it's my 3rd try :p but here it is 15 minutes... fiouuu it's haard!!!

Hi,
It is cool to see these experiments, I am looking forward to seeing what artists can do during the Summit in real time!:)
Here is one of my tests. NoeleoN (above) had an interesting concept to start sculpting in one of the corners so I have used the same idea in here. In order to be able to sculpt in symmetry, I first rotate the cube 45 degrees and then started the sculpting...
my first try on this, coupled the passion that cats have for boxes and the fact they become invisibile to others when they have no eye contact :D

Nice stuff, everyone!
Heretic Templar, it would be great if you shared your TimeLapse video in your post. It's easy. Just upload it to YouTube or Vimeo and note the video ID number. (You don't need any of the rest of the embed code -- just the video number.) Then use either the YouTubeHD code or VV code in your post with that ID number. You can see examples by clicking the links above.

A couple of sketches.
A couple of sketches I did with the wonderful digital stone provided by Pixologic, I did not save a time lapse and these are likely over 25 minutes. Jaime Labelle asked me to post it anyways .

aurick Thanks! yeah sadly I didnt saved the timeline for that test but for this one I did :)
Great stuff in the thread!
BUT i would like to note that sculpting from a block of stone, in reality, is just subtractive sculpting. So if you use to much additive sculpting, it's not really a Michelangelo- in every block of stone is a sculpture- challenge, but regular sculpting :) which is also great, but kind of missing the point of the unique aspect of this challenge, Imho :)

Hi all!
I've been thinking about putting something in here for a long time. The quality of the work here is always so intimidating in this forum!
But why not! :D
MilivojPopovic, you are right that only subtractive sculpture would be true Michelangelo or any stone sculptors technique. I don't believe this particular instance of a 15 minute sculpt challenge with sculptris pro has been described as subtractive only by pixiologic. It's only the volume of the piece that has to be maintained. I fail to understand your disconnect. Only subtractive is possible in zb but will need a longer time limit to achieve.
thomasphoenix and milivoj_popovic are both right. A true Michelangelo Challenge would indeed be subtractive, only. However, this challenge is meant as an homage while also remaining FUN. So long as the base of the block remains, the participants on-site will be able to both add and subtract.

aonther one from me,
trying to imagine a model being too big for the bounding box. i didnt keep track of the time but think i was way under the 15 minutes, i will retry something similar in the future trying to push more the details suggesting he is being compressed against the invisible bounding box :D

I do not really want to participate.
Find I like the idea. It's great and the topic too (Michelangelo).
That's why I tried, just for fun.
Unfortunately, I turned Dynamesh on, which is why the crunchy structure was blurred.
I read too late that I could use Scultpris-Mode.
But maybe it's an inspiration for others, my result?
But I needed more than 15 minutes :-)
PS. Ups, i klicked -Select for Mature Audiences- can one moderator disable this from my post? I don't know how.
I don't know how i can attach a image so that it is to see large.

That's why we provided the test file. It gives everyone a chance to practice so that you can get down to less than 15 minutes. And so that you can learn to avoid using things like DynaMesh. :)

Not easy to sculpt something decent for 15 mins(16 in my case:)) but here you go. Happy Zbrushing :)
I wanted to try this but the file you have provided keeps erroring out. Error while reading m_pCurves Object:
Which version of ZBrush are you using? Assuming it's ZBrush 2018.1, please try downloading the file again. If it's not, then you'll need to upgrade first. :)

The Zbrush Michelangelo Challenge
My attempt at Zbrush Michelangelo challenge. It was a fun and challenging given the time limit is only 15 minutes and you're only limited to sculpting on a block. Helped me learned what I need to work on. Also I added the video process at the end
Here's a process of the video :D

ZBrush Challenge 2018 - Playful Baby Elephant
My attempt at The ZBrush Michelangelo Challenge, which also happens to be the 1st timelapse I recorded. Completed in just slightly over 15 minutes.
Was using a WIP playful baby elephant project of mine as a reference.
