Hi Etcher, oh yes, I know Rembrandt´s etchings... (honestly -- only some of them ;) ) but I didn´t think that you got the cue for this name from those pictures.
I´m thankful for all these infos about good reference books, too.
And by the way -- the fact that the most of the books you´ve mentioned are written in german is fantastic.
At least -- for me. :)
PS: I want to see the helmet ... ASAP! ;)
-
Hey Etcher, really cool updates! :tu:
-
Hi, Etcher!:D Saw your writing. I can speak English not very well.
So I don't know your writing. but I think that you also has a good sketch and sculpture.:)
Good Job!:tu:
-
Wow! nice work, been away for a while, getting ready to finish my garage studio. this is looking really good, nice production style work flow. solid work.
-
Hey Etcher, looking cool. Cant wait to see the final. Im really digging the style you are going with on this one.:tu:
-
Moni-Poroni: Moni, I hope the reference stuff can be of some use to you. Yes, it is a strange coincidence that all the stuff I come back to the most was made by German artists and researchers, because I do have many (and I mean many) other reference books on anatomy and such). Good for you man! Now, I gotta say that I’m eager to check out the Gnomon and Anatomytools DVD’s on how to actually learn to draw and sculpt like in the reference books(I saw small excerpts of them on their respective websites and I think that they save starting artists tons of time and plodding), but ZBC is flooding my brain with info right now, so I’m letting that sink in first. See ya later man gotta’ continue workin’ on the helmet!!!
Captain Sensible: thanks for dropping by man! Glad you like the updates! Looking forward to your new works :tu: !
Don Won Yang: thank you for the nice comment on my work :) ! I look forward to your new work :) !
Threetails: hey threetails, I’m so glad you could find the time to drop me a line. You have no idea how your comment motivates me to keep goin’! quote:” been away for a while, getting ready to finish my garage studio “: think we’re in the same ballpark right now, we are doing some serious renovations on our house and I feel like I’m in a warzone… . Gotta’ keep sculpting though! Eager to see your new stuff! :tu: !
Dman3d: thanks for checkin’ the updates. Glad you like the style. I hope I will be able to hold that style all the way through, we’ll see! Thanks man! :) !
Workin' on the helmet... .
-
Stooooop posting comments -- continue the helmet !! ;)
But... frankly speaking -- I have exactly the same problem:
ZbrushCentral keeps me away from sculpting. :)
Not to mention the lack of sleep. *LOL*
-
Moni, alright already!!! I'll stop commenting and get back to work right now!!!!
-
Etcher,
Even your non visual responses contain comprehensive detail. Thanks for the master lists.
Your enthusiasm to improve is motivating. I'll check those references out and see where they lead (hopefully someplace completely crazy.) I blame part of my own lack of progress on a moldy, stagnanted library, which seems to be smothering my fire to work, so thanks again.
And, not to distract you from helmet making or anything  , but have you built any clay or sculpey maquettes, or are you focusing mostly on digital worlds at the moment?
That's enough. This is starting to feel like an impersonation of a ZBC Artists Spotlight interview. :)
-
Rav-i-oli man, is you a mind-reader? quote: "have you built any clay or sculpey maquettes, or are you focusing mostly on digital worlds at the moment?" Whilst working on the Axl sculpt, I'm sketching out some other characters to go along. I'm sculpting one of them using sculpey (and Zbrush too, of course). So, when I finish the Axl, I'm gonna' post pics of my sculpey experiments together with the Zbrush sculpts and give you a more elaborate answer on why/when I use traditional or digital clay/sculpey. Let's see which artistic disasters are gonna' come out of those experiments... it'l be a hoot! Meanwhile, read Quimby the Mouse.
-
Hey etcher, you have some really great stuff here man. You need a top row for your efforts!
-
I love everything you're doing in here man. Such great insight into zbrush workflow. Above all else, fantastic sculpting!

fox1983: Thank you so much for the nice comment! :tu: :tu: :tu: :tu: :tu: ! :) !
Redxr: I'm so glad you like the sculpting, cause, man, your latest sculpt... I'm so lookin' forward to the polypaint on that one :tu: ! Thank you for dropping me a line!
Yona: Cédric, thank you so much for your comment. I'm working hard to get my skills up to your level man! :tu: !
gegrazion_1: thank you so much for taking the time to look at my worx -glad u like! On the touchpad thing: my friends and family saw me sculpt using the touchpad, they where not impressed: they said I was a nutcase or a freak... . :) . The wacom is much better: now my wife says: all he does is sit behind his laptop "scratching"... :).
-
I was so glad to see you´ve updated your thread -- but now I see...

Hey Moni! Thanks for stopping by! I'm working hard on the helmet, but it's taking me some time to model all the little bolts and screws and whatnot, but I think it's coming along fine. I hope to get it ready by next week. (don't forget we're renovating our house...).
But, meanwhile I'm posting these two ref sheets I compiled for Cemond. I get so much from this community that I feel I have to be able to share something too. So I'm posting these ref sheets on sculpting the eye. It's not much, most everybody probably mastered this stuff a long time ago, but at least, it's something. A more practical follow up of these ref sheets can be found on Cemond's thread post #97.
So, here goes: KYEOTB_Ref_Sheets#001_#002:
CWCID: The drawings on the ref sheets are of my hand. I modeled and sculpted the skull as well. Sources: Human anatomy by Gottfried Bammes:

CD-ROM “Sobotta – Atlas der Anatomie des Menschen” V. 3.0 R. Putz and R.Pabst ISBN 9789031130009
Hope the info can be of some use.
OK Moni, I'm getting back to the helmet right now... :) !
-
i like your sketches! they remind me my anatomy lessons in school whent my teacher used to draw on his own arm to show where to plug each muscle!!
observation is the most important thing to work on!!!!!!
Etcher rocks!!:D
-
Hi Etcher,
I´m having so much trouble with modeling eyes-- especially with their shape and the eyelids.
Should be no surprise that I saved your reference sheets. :)
They are great! Therefore I´m trying to be kind -- I´m not going to put you under pressure.
At least - NOT today.
Many thanks again!
-
Hi Etcher,
I dig your design sheets
Cool stuff!

Hey Etcher, I'm lovin the presentation of your thread! Great sheets on sculpting eyelids! I wish I had you as a teacher, then I might actually know something! :o
-
Hi Etcher! :-)
Cool sketches you´ve got here! I really like the pose and silhouette of the boy.

Yona: thanks for the nice comment man! At least you had decent anatomy lessons. Maybe Zbrush could revolutionize anatomy lessons (virtual anatomy) in the future… .

Yeah! Flu’s almost gone! Back to play!
Yfchild: Thanks you so much man! Like I said: see attachment below!
IcemanJ: thanks for the great comment updates on AXL comin’ soon!
Captain Sensible: Yep! No holidays for now… . Gonna' check out the snail!
Marsyas: Come on man, a refresher? Seeing your latest sculpt makes me pretty sure you don’t need refreshers on sculpting eyes and faces!
Romilchoprazb: thanks for your nice comment on my work. And, yes, you were right; I’m better, working full blast on the next update
Neozerahan and yfchild asked me for some advice on sculpting human anatomy, which I’ve added as an attachment to this post
… workin’ on the helmet… heehee… no more flu … happy happy joy joy …

-
Hi Etcher, oh -- didn´t see you got the flu! :( Bad news! I´m sorry to hear that!
But I´m glad to read the good news immedately after that -- Etcher is back. :)
Many thanks for the new anatomy-sheets!
And the helmet looks great! Can´t wait to see more (and bigger pics ;) ).
I´m still busy with sketching and practising.
I can´t purchase something from the Gnomon homepage.
I don´t have a creditcard! Aaaaaah!!
I have another card for paying. Other than that I always pay cash. So I never needed a credit card.
But next week I have to get some. :)
Ok, Etcher -- it´s weekend, so hopefully you´ll have lots of time for Zbrush. :)
-
Etcher,
Your anatomy lessons are terrific.
Perhaps too good. People seem to becoming addicted to your elaborate, colorful critiques. :D
Slightly off topic, and please forgive my ranting, but I've been thumbing through references of my own, and am finding the technical realism too confining.
Sort of feeling like the 'artsy' work is much more lively and fulfilling to study.
The Making of Action Hero articles, for example are some of the greatest reference resources I've ever seen. And each of them are saturated with style, not merely anatomy.
Maybe Quibley The Mouse is a better teacher for some than George Bridgman. Or they just work best in combination. Fifteen minutes studying muscle insertion points. Three hours studying Chris Ware's panel progression.
Anyway, you continue to bring an amazing amount of information and impressive insight and considerations into ZBC, so thanks again, and great start on the helmet and goggles.

Great sketchbook Etcher, I really like the classical feel.
And I cannot agree more on what you said about the importance of anatomy in sculpting.
I'm a classical addict and mastering this part is the best way to become a true master, imho.
Even if this is not something that people seems to like seeing, I think that's something that shouldn't be underestimate.
For me the best artist around there clearly have a thoroughly understanding of anatomy.
But like I said I'm an addict :) That's probably why I'm thinking like that ;)
Keep going mate ;)
-
Moni-Poroni: yes, I definitely feel your sketchbook thread gettin’ closer – lookin’ forward! I’m really excited too about the Gnomon stuff, just don’t have the time to download and watch.
Ravioli_rancher: thanks man, really glad you liked the sheets. I don’t think your “ranting” is off topic, in fact, you couldn’t be more right: intensely studying anatomy from “dry”, “technical” references is quite hard on the brain, so, I can agree with the 15min to 180min ratio. Maybe it’s like eating a dry loaf of bread without drinking – it can be done, slowly, small chunks at a time, lots of chewing. A loaf of bread with butter, marmalade and a cup o’ coffee goes in much faster and better. But in the end, you need the bread, where would it get you if you ate only butter and marmalade? Sometimes I get the feeling it can’t find the bread. Hey rancher I’m looking forward to seeing some new worx of yours – sketchbook thread? Maybe? Pretty please… .
Romilkchoprazb: thank you very much Romil, glad u like. Thank you so much for the feedback! I’m looking forward to your new sculpts man!
PrayingMantis: Thank you so much for the nice comment. So glad you agree on the anatomy stuff. Your Zerathul sculpt is the perfect example of “creative anatomy application” and your latest farmer sculpt of “applied anatomy”! I hope you’re gonna’ stay addicted for a long time, thanks again!
La la la … wor – king on the hel-met.. la la.
-
...la la la...:D sounds like... GOOD NEWS regarding the helmet! :)
And regarding my sketchbook thread --ummm, you know definitely more than I do. ;)
I´m woking on three different models -- this might be the reason why it takes soo long.
Tomorrow my best friend from Italy comes for a visit. I´m really happy, didn´t see her for a long time but that also means -- no time for ZBrush.
Well, one cannot have everyhing.
BUT maybe wee see your helmet SOON. :)
-
I must say you've done a beautiful job sculpting these models, but what's like a yummy icing on the cake are your sketches, they are truly fantastic. It makes your models come to life so much more because it gives them a sort of history to fall back on. :)
Good job! keep it up
/ Magnus

Good to see some more anatomy stuff Etcher! I attended the Scott Eaton Anatomy Masterclass in Soho last week and have had my Freedom of Teach male model delivered too so I'm buzzing about anatomy now. The Bammes and Bridgman stuff is awesome. Looking forward to more of your updates :D
-
I agree even for non realistic sculpt..Anatomy is maybe the most important thing to learn. The more you know the more you can deform and interpret stuffs...That's what i've learnt from my teachers and that's why i try to teach now to my students.
With observation, doing sketches, nudes it's the most important
