yes your right MTB never noticed shadowbox works with extracts also ! shows how much i need to learn ! thought it was dynamesh !? but a plane 3d and clipping tools works soooooo nice tho !

Very cool Gary. Thanks for these little nuggets of education. A GIF tells so much more than a thousand words.

EZRA52 thnx ! on to some engine parts![]()

Hi Gary - great work on the cylinder head. Would you mind sharing in a bit more detail how you did the shadowbox (?) on that? That would be extremely helpful, as the animation is just a bit too fast for me to understand! Cheers Bud
Thanks, Archerboy
Cool Gary, your really squeezing the extract concept for all it's worth. If you have a bit of time I'd still love to know how you did the 3 layer paint job on the fender a while back.
archerboy-I don't think Gary uses shadow box much or ever from what he's posted in the past. What your seeing is masking done on that cube then extraction, then fine tuning. To understand a bit more how that works I recommend you take a look at these two videos by Pixolator:

See the bottom of page 5:

thnx both EZRA52 and archerboy, first i would like to say i decided too turn this thread into a
how too more then model the most awesome hope to "top row" bike thread - kinda of a karma give
back to the forum thats taught me so much in the upcoming 10 years i been here at ZBC - the
better the forum the more we will all learn ! so any questions i will try to answer in a timely
fashion .EZRA52 that method is kinda a nuts and bolts way of going about getting an effect that im sure one of the mat guru;s here could do in the modifiers pallet but im not that smart.i
mentioned in earlier post i did custom painting for close to 30 years on bikes and cars so in
the real world that is how its done in three steps to get that depth in paint - the gold - silver
and other color first coat shows thru the next two in this case purple then the clear coat
and some factory cars like Cadillac and most Harleys are done this way too . in the post i
said to learn light caps first is because without light and environment as im learning to- a
shiny object needs to reflect light to look that way and the default zb lights didnt cut it.
in the 2 images you see that an extract gives you 3 groups i simply did a groups split
then the outer shell i duplicated and select it then deformations - size neg 1 now its inside
now select each subtool and set display prop. to double - now select the outer shell(purple
group in pic 2) mat. gel shader a - modify its trans. to like fifty- spec 100 - color white and color fill object with mrgb selected - select the now inner subtool - gel shader b - and repeat steps only with purple color and the edge(red group in pic 2)the same. the gold (blue group)
no transparent settings. i know you know the trans display property and render settings
from the glass on your truck model posts. note; i had to select each subtool and bpr each
to get this to work ??!!mess with different mat- trans settings for better effect with your lights.
hope that clears it up a bit let me know if not.and no bpr trans settings on the gold only !
thnx again archerboy i will upload the sequence tomorrow as its late here eastern time !

Thanks so much Gary. I'm going to try playing with this technique. Maybe I'll try it out on the Cobra I'm still working on. Cobra is going slow. We all have so much less free time to play with this stuff than we'd like I suppose. Real life stuff and all that.
I have a feeling your bike is going to be jaw dropping Gary. I'm looking forward to following the progress, learning some tips along the way and seeing the finished product.
The real life bike painting you did looks fab too. I can see why you have a tendency to work with the hard surface projects. You have a hard surface background.![]()
My mother worked at a Harley shop then an Indian shop in her youth some 55 to 60 years ago. She owned her own Harley and then her own Indian back then when girls didn't really have their own bikes. She's past on now but would be about 80 if still around.

no prob EZRA52 great story and RIP to your mom !
archerboy i dont use shadow box and no extract on this !here the sequence.
select>3d cube>initialize>hdivide 124>vdivide 124>masking>maskall>sel 2>skp 2>row>(to select cooling fin cut outs use x symmetry and shift click outside cube to square up in work space click and drag down center and top and bottom where you dont want fins)deformations>size xy + 50>rflatten z -20>masking inverse>rflatten z -40> clear mask>size z +40.feel free to post results or if any more questions

Thanks Gary - that helps a lot! It looks so easy when you explain it like that. Even though I have been using Zbrush for a few years I still struggle to get the results I want. At the moment I am trying to do a load of stuff based around engines and cylinder heads, so your amazing bike caught me eye. Thanks for taking the time - appreciated! Cheers Archerboy
I can't fathom how you managed to work all that out but it sure is effective. Thanks again for the mini-tut. This forum, ZBC, is just sooo cool. People are so helpful. Here's my cylinder.
Not only did it work perfectly, it was loads of fun doing it.
Ezra
cool EZRA52 so easy to do ! i guess my tut was on - you figure things well !
glad too help archerboy !!see this page - thread http://www.zbrushcentral.com/showthr...4760-Jet/page3

So cool. I didn't know ZBrush could be used so well for mechanical parts.
Amazing stuff. Even if all this is out of my scope (technical and biking), just the conversation here deserves a Top Row. Congrats and thanks.
