Hi guys,
Long time without posting (again), I have been very busy this last year, but all that effort have been rewarded, I had won two Cannes Lions and other 6 regional awards working as Art Director at Ogilvy&Mather Costa Rica the last 7 months, so life is good :). I have been doing some doodles the last couple of months and I decided to show them here, some of you may already see them, so bare with me if this post turn out to be too long or boring. I will be posting here from now on including the process of my character from the Kris Costa’s Character Creation Masterclass. I hope you guys like it and critiques and comments are always welcome!.
Nice work!
And here is the progress so far for the Kris Costa’s Character Creation Masterclass, I recorded via livestream a big part of the process along with some issues that I will mention in a bit.
My character is based on native americans, I thought it would be an interesting subject to explore for this masterclass.
Since my time is limited, I started my character from a sphere with dynamesh, I encountered several issues due to the peculiar kind of anatomy that is presented on the native american people. That kind of issues make you realized how important the knowledge and reference of specific bone structure and muscle flow, insertion points and others are essential to achieve a natural and believable look and feel in your work. As you will hopefully see in the videos, I go back and forth, trying to attain the correct shapes and proportions for my character, I recorded something between 70 to 80 percent of the process, the other part is lost since I had a computer crash.
Finally I will appreciate your comments and critique.

Thanks Webhead!, I’m glad that you liked it!.
Very nice indeed!
Fantastic works. They are all really great.

Thank you guys!
Hi guys, this time I added the upper body and started to work on proportions, only Dynamesh. Polypaint some body paint just for fun. Still a lot of work to do. Not a lot of detail, just trying first to get the right feel.

I did some more work on his face before remeshing him, trying to achieve a more believable and realistic feeling…

I started to add hair to this head and I did some tests for fun, here is one of them! Cheers!
Great work on your thread … Sherman is awesome!
Cheers, David
Wow, Sherman’s hair looks fantastic. Was it hard to get that perfect bit of styling set up?
chalkman: Thank you David! I’m glad you like it!
Wetterschneider: Thank you Scott! As everything it needs a lot of testing, I’m still working on his hair, but as time progress you become more familiar with the tool and start to understand it better, the key is to divide a separate mesh representing the scalp in sections as you fit needed to have more control, the same goes with the beard and eyebrows, and if you are not happy with the result the grooming tools give you, uses curves as guides, doing them inside Zbrush with fibermesh can save you a lot of time, the grooming brushes are fantastic, then you just export them or GoZ them, after that is just playing with parameters and setting up a nice shader, hope it helps!
Cheers guys!
Looking promising! I like the organic film look of the render. A bit non-crisp and noisy.
Thank you Elden! I’m glad you like it! I love the feeling of cinematic characters, so I tried to recreate the look as much as I can in most of my work, hand by hand with the mood of the scene, even in early stages, to see if it fits nice in what I’m trying to recreate, and motivate myself in the process
Hi guys, well I am having a little bit more of free time to work on personal projects and decided to rework the General’s head, I also started his clothes, and redo his hair since it was not working well, I was not a big fan of the prior version but I’m definitely more happy now!, still a lot to do, cheers!
