Default Odd_Enough - Hard Surface Sketchbook

Figured I should start posting these here, as I've been posting them everywhere else. This was the ZBrush portion of my hard surface studies. Will definitely be doing more of my hard surface models in ZBrush now. Was able to rapidly produce complex shapes with dynamesh. The only area I used Max for was the text (floating geo), and blocking out the booleans for the front panel as prep for dynamesh boolean ops. The rest was 100% ZBrush. Total modeling time was just under 8 hours, and as I'm relatively new to ZBrush, I see this as a win.

    Default How did you......

Hi I really like the style of the radio box - I think I can work out how most of the parts were made apart from the edge grill shapes I know how I get them done in Max - I'm guessing maybe shadowbox - could you give some more information please

    Thanks

Thanks, guys! And I definitely intend to post more, Ryan Thinking of something more mechanically complex next. I've been pouring over this subreddit for the past week looking for reference: http://www.reddit.com/r/MachinePorn

Hey James, I appreciate the compliment! By grill shapes, I assume you mean the sides that look like heatsinks? This is a dynamesh-heavy model and boolean ops played a large part as well as masking and the clip brush. I started off with a box with rounded edges. The fins were made just by lining up evenly spaced rectangles and subtracted them from the rounded box (I made sure I clipped off some of the fins for the varied length first). Similar process for the rest; Make a shape that I needed to create a particular silhouette, and just slice into the primary dynameshed object. I have yet to use ShadowBox, but I got too frustrated with it when trying to learn how to use it. Will have to dive into that later.

The above technique was used on the entirety of both the radio and the piston.

Thanks - I must try playing more with ZB - I'm a long time Max user but ZB now has so many cool functions.

I'll keep watching for more of your posts

If any sub-D modelers weren't convinced to use ZB before, I'd find it difficult to find any excuse NOT to get into it with the 4R6 update!

I'm working on a freelance project right now to model an exploded truck drum brake assembly. Will post that here when I'm done since I've used a combination of Max and ZBrush.

Oh hell, I'll post what I have so far (about 20% done).
