Paul Liaw works

Hi everyone I’m old to zbrush but new to posting so sorry if I have redundancies. I recently did some chimpanzees for the Mill NYC. This was done over a year ago but I thought I’d share some of the sculpts from this project, as well as the second chimpanzee that came because of the first one I made. I will post more details on the details of the making of in later posts. Full team credits on the mill’s website link below

Just amazing work. Keep them coming Paul.

just curious, how long did it take to make the chimpanzee

Really amazing work and inspiring.

so after we made peta there was a huge commotion, and we landed another chimpanzee for Sky tv after that. I was able to upgrade the model for the second version. I prefer this model to the first even though it did not get a fraction of the attention. I remade the ears, and added more loops to the fingers, and mouth. I also was able for this project to use some textures from surfacemimic. The level of realism you can get from good alphas is amazing. Granted you sculpt 90-95 percent but that last 5 percent of noise just takes it home.

I recently was part of 3dprintshow.com. I made a piece working with adobe and shapeways. Making a large scale, high resolution, materially optimized, structurally strong, precision fitting, pieces was one of the hardest models I’ve ever had to make ever. and I’ve been modeling for over a decade.

the heaviest model I’ve ever made was this chameleon 60million polygons every single scale was hand sculpted in there. It was the first time I used HD geo. lets say it was a challenge. This was the last project we used regular displacement on. After the chimpanzee we use vector displacements almost exclusively. The chameleons have 4 divisons of regular division, and 3 layers of HDgeo. The trick was getting used to the hd divisons, using a new set of layers. The map generation took forever because I had 6 UV tiles @4k per patch. I actually created a bunch of alphas for this, but the skin was basically scales floating on top of a wrinkle pattern, so it was a no go. I spent so much time filling and changing the scales that in the end it was pretty much all hand done.

my first try at 3d print was actually making my engagement ring to give to my fiancee. It took 2 months of research and trial and error, design, and iterations. but now I’m really into jewelry making. All those years of making cell phones pays off

this whole thread is a treat! fantastic!

Beautiful work.

I’ve played around a bit with HD geo before and concluded that I should stay away from it if possible. Would you mind sharing your insights into the pros and cons of using HDgeometry and any workflow tips that you may have?

Beautiful work. The chimpanzees are just amazing!

What a wonderful menagerie  I am very impressed with your work.

Every scale by hand? That’s stupendous! The wrinkles and details are outstanding.

Great work Paul!!! Good to see your work on ZBC and getting all the praise it deserves!!

Keep it coming

Rino is ready to print man  awesome details and finish…congrats …just wondering which machine did you use for printing ring ? thks

great Stuff paul!
love the chimp details!how much the final mesh polycount would be?are you using Geometry Hd ?

Beautiful works! You’ve achieved a higher realism than real life :stuck_out_tongue:

Can a brother get some top row love!?! Awesome work sir!
