Default Sci-Fi Helmet by Jonathan BENAINOUS

    Hi guys,

Here is my latest personal project done using Zbrush4r6, Maya and Photoshop.

The goal of the project was to create a Sci-Fi Helmet, fully concepted and created by myself with the intention of pushing my knowledge of sculpting hard surfaces in Zbrush.

I'm really excited to finally be able to share this project with you all and I hope you will like It !

For those who are interested, I've also collaborate with the magazine 3D Artist, for a pretty detailed step by step tutorial.
So if you want to have more explanation about my method and learn tips & tricks on how to realize this type of hard surface helmet, the article will published in 3D Artist Issue 84 !

    Cheers,

    Jonathan

    Thanks again guys !

@N1agara : Well, It's hard to answer to your question, because I was working on this project only during my free time while I was working for Guerrilla Games.
So after work, during few hours, here and there, I was studying new technics, watching tutorials, making exercices, to improve my knowledge in term of hard surface sculpting, , etc...
Then, after searching for many references, I found inspiration and I started to iterate on first sketches.
To be honest, I spent a lot of time iterating on the overall shape and look, because I really wanted to make a kick ass concept. It was probably the longest part of the project.

Try to mix up your inspirations - this looks like Michael Pavlovic's helmet with parts moved around. Or make more unique part designs - I think trying to imagine how parts would move is a good way to come up with their shapes.

EDIT: For instance the back of the neck - there's no way this guy could look up with these parts looking like this.

@Plyczkowsi : Michael Pavlovich was definitely inspiring for me. I tried to integrate some elements from his work on my helmet, because It was just briliant and I liked It.

However, I think my concept is clearly different than his previous work.

    clearly different
I'd say there are similarities: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/s/...611_221848.png Also notice that he uses a flexible material for the neck, and creates parts that look like then can slide over one another - adds to the realism. Disregarding the design, your helmet is expertly modeled though.
