A quick question regarding polypainting raised areas on a model

Hello all just getting back into Zbrush and I am at the stage of painting my model, my main question is, using a dragon’s scales as an example, how do I paint the raised areas of the scales? In sculptris there was an actual mode you could select to paint only the raised areas. So how is it done in Zbrush?

Auto masking peaks and valleys could also help.
Lots of methods, reading and trying out necessary.
