Default Thrall's Escape - Wooyang Kim

    Hey all!
I don't post here much but I do come here very often to see some of the super awesome crazy work you guys are putting out.
I wanted to share this Thrall's image with you guys.
    Zbrush is an awesome program!

Blizzard's games, art, story, and characters inspire me constantly.

In the past I read the book, Lord of the Clans. The story is about a character named Thrall, escaping his human masters to become a powerful leader of the orcs.

This scene portrays Thrall escaping while archers shoot at him.

This was modeled in Maya, then went crazy in zbrush.
Textures(Thrall) were handpainted in Zbrush using polypaint.
Thanks to Scott Spencer for the Painting Skin Tutorial.
Then I used the transpose program to pose the character.
Rendering was done in Maya using mental ray with basic lighting.

I'm currently seeking a full time position and am willing to relocate.
    (Shameless plug =P)

    Thanks for checking it out.

It's really good, but particularly bland. As much as Blizzard inspires you, it might be a good idea to venture away for orks and elves. The character is well done, but there isn't much movement in him, particularly for someone 'escaping'.

but I like it, just needs more love.

I would agree with the composition not representing an escape but more of a stand off.

Other than that, this is an absolutely beautiful sculpt and render.

I'm always a sucker for orcs and monsters and no way is this a 1 star piece! (So you get 5 from me to even the score a little.) Anatomy is good and solid and belivable. I suposse the quiestion is do we judge works posted here technically or as 'art' ? (which is by defination open to personal interpretation)

Shouldn't be too long before you find a job I think.

I think it'd be hard to seperate technical merit from the artistry of a piece and we shouldn't try. It isn't the only facotr, but it should certainly be considered. That being said, I think this work has both technical and compositional merit. It may not encapsulate the feeling you'd expect from an escape, but it does have a good deal of emotion. Fine work I say.

Green is the color of nasty things like swamps, goo, and mold. Well, some mold. Thus, monsters are green.

Perhaps you could get more of a dramatic feel if he were running toward the edge of a steep cliff with a bit of an aerial view. I agree with others that the actual Zbrushing is very good.

Excellent work, I never really grow tired of well executed orcs, this one looks like it could have been made by blizzard.

Although one little comment. Are you sure there's not something wrong on the left side with his "butt". It seems rather large and dragged out downwards. Perhaps it's just a camera angle kinda thing, but I've had stretch results like that using transpose.

Yeah, you guys are right. There are some elements that are missing in the art piece.
There's no excuses for me to not pull them off. I'm still in the learning stage though. This piece put me through alot. Technically and artistically.
I've learned so much with this piece and I can't wait till I use all this knowledge on my next one.
Reason why I picked to do an Orc was because I really enjoy Blizzard's characters. You're absolutely right about making my own and being more original. There's this part of me that tells me I'm not ready to be making my own characters yet. This is why I study other people's characters and try to study why it's so great. In the end I want to gather up all those elements and create my own, which will be soon. This fear of not being able to create a loveable character is limiting and I can see that now. I'll be breaking out of that soon. Till now everything was a learning, studying stage... but I guess I can now comfortably go out of the pond and search my own identity.

Thanks all for commenting. I really appriate it. It helps me to uncover all the weakness I have in me.
    Thanks again guys.

PS: The weird butt is actually the back leather cloth hanging down.
    I guess I should post up a 360 soon so I don't confuse people.
