    Default Josh Buck -- Sketchbook

Thought I'd start posting work in a single thread as others have done. Comments and critique welcome.

    I'll start with this character:

    Default Some quick scuplts...

Some quick-sculpts with a 3 hour time limit including polypaint and rendering. These were my first zbrush models ever -- from a few months ago. These all started as the zbrush base-head ztool.

    Default Minotaur...

This is a Minotaur sketch -- again, the inspiration came from Paul Bonner.

    Default And the Orc...

I apologize for the double post on this one (feel free to delete my earlier one) -- I wanted to include it in my sketchbook:

    Plains-Orc Chieftan.

    Hey jbuck!

Nice modeling man! I loved your style!
I loved the material you've used in the minotaur. Is it free?

    Thank you man!

    Hi! Thank you both.

The matcap material on the minotaur is the GreenClay matcap that comes with z3 but I edited the recesses to be darker instead of lighter and increased the A intensity a touch. The orc is the same material but the levels were tweaked in PS after rendering.

It's easy to make but I can post it if you want.

    Nice jbuck!

I'll try to do myself thank you for the hint!
Besides these changes in the material modifiers, did you rendered the model? Or it's exctly as in the viewport with some small levels changes in photoshop?

    Thank you!

Hi hugo. The model is rendered in zbrush with default lighting.

I just doubled the document res, increased the super sampling to 2 and turned on depth cue. Then I AAhalf-ed the document and exported it as a PSD.

    Default NoMouth...

Another character I'm working on. The ears need surface texturing and I'm not happy with the colors yet and I have yet to figure out how to do realistic eyes with depth in Zbrush. Anyone know?

    Critique and comments appreciated, thanks!

I like the style of your sculpts. Cartoony and fun. That last character might have even stronger character if he had a big ol' bottom lip instead of a no-mouth look. Just an idea though. Good stuff!

I agree about the mouth. I wanted to try a character with no mouth as I've found I rely on the mouth and teeth to make a character menacing or creepy.

So... let's say the character was required to have no mouth by design, how could I improve it?

Anyone have any suggestions for eyes? Eye color? Pupil shape? Any suggestions as to how to go about shading them in Zbrush?

Thanks for the compliment, manuke. Yes, always working -- working on some tech I'm not familiar with then back to producing some pieces. Hopefully I'll be able to incorporate some new tricks into my workflow.
