    Default scan

I am just curious about what type of 3D scanners have been used for the basic capture of the actors as can be seen in the screengrab of Sam's head? Does your company has its own or use a third party localy?

I've got a feeling they (ILM, Weta etc) used assets taken from Paul Debevecs light stage(s) http://www.debevec.org/ Video clip here - http://ict.usc.edu/news/item/the_cbs...sed_in_avatar/

and it looks like some scanned data from a Cyberware PS scanner. (although Sam's head scan looks pretty poor, not bad for the year it was taken I guess, 2005? 2006?)

Great if you have a few $100,000's to spare

It must be amazing to work with that kind of precise scanned data. Like they used on Benjamin Button. Saves hours and days of raw, guess, sculpting work.

It was not one of Paul's scans.

Really? I've seen some video footage of a couple of the actors sitting in Paul Debevec's lightstage floating around the net. If I'm not mistaken, the light stage can acquire texture information as well as scan data. Although that scan of Sam Worthington, looks like a Cyberware scan.

    My own humble effort.

It uses my model of IFBB professional bodybuilder Zack Khan (the right hand side is that model and then altered and painted in zbrush to make him into a na'vi).
