Hi Kaz,
This is fun stuff - will you animate it?
Please comment on the transparent shadow?
(The Material pack has a great assortment of surfaces, huh?)
Sven
i like it - how do you made this caustic? (fake or rendering in other programm?)
It's a pity that we don't see more often such objects !
Zbrush is capable to make crazzy concrets things
Bravo for this Kaz

Kaz this is nice stuff! Care to share some secrets with us about the making of this beaut!

See Pilou (above) agree totally!!!
Nice work!
Thank you very much.
This type of stuff is real easy. There are a few concepts to follow.
Lay a base surface
I usually start with a simple plane and rotate it to get the angle I want. Typically, I like to use Global perspective, but when trying to match up several primatives, this gets a bit difficult, so no perspective is used
Use a marker to set the base angles.
After placing an object, I will set a marker. That way, I can add new objects that will align perfectly with the previous one
Snapshot like crazy.
I will use one object several times for different details. After placing a tube, Snapshot and rescale uing the scale gyro to form a bracket, for example. You can set different colors, materials, etc...
PLay play play with lights, fog and shadow....
I use the fog to give the sense of distance. Usually, global perspective will add the needed liging effect to achieve this, but a little fog works great. Shadows must be in ZMode, But play with the distance and intensity. I like to use about 100 on the Rays, and in this case, a low aperture, about 6. Rendered at 1280x960, viewed and exported using AA Half
This really is painting in 3d space. The move and scale gyros make it easy and fun. There is no "model" here. You are just building off the last placed object. Relaxing.
I really do not plan, as I am sure you can tell. And there is not much creativity here. I just like getting to that final render.
It may be a good idea to plan your materials though. When using the Material Pack, I will load many materials into different slots along the way. This is good for changing materials.
Same image, just loaded new materials into the existing slots:
And the "caustics" are faked. I used a point light at a high intensity and low radius, and used the placement button to put it in place.
Very tricky

Hey I know it its perpetum-mobille,

Good shading I like it
Wondeful thread --interesting object --and great info --superior stuff Kaz
