Let's familiarize ourselves a little better with ZRemesher's DetectEdges functionality. In this Lesson example, we'll take a gear model that has a triangulated mesh with no PolyGroups or no mesh ID, but has edges to help utilize the DetectEdges function. Once DetectEdges is activated, we can convert our mesh to quad based geometry, create PolyGroups, and most importantly retain our clean or hard edges. This function can assist with future mesh editing including Dividing and sculpting or features that utilize PolyGroups.

Hey thank's all, I'm glad you like the tuto Shepard : I added a hair to poly, I render them as poly. It also depend on many factor for the grain, the AA, mtl setting, etc. But me, I don't use the Vray hair mtl, I made my own here's an other test

First thank's all I appreciate it Here's a link to a tutorial I made about the sss2 in Vray, since many peoples asked me how the sss2 work so there you go http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AANYPdBZM5Y&feature=youtu.be it's my first ever and english is my second language so ^^ hope you like it! Nolan_R : Yeah I will retry that BG at some point, I will probably do the cloths this weekend and after some test with that BG For the highlight in his pupil, dont worry at the final I will use hdri reflection for the eyes, not a square light pescao : I use Hairfarm, and basically what I did is , hairmesh comb, then hair generate, after a hair gravity, that's the trick here, to make the closer to the skin, then a push out for the root to not be into the skin and after you play with the look you want, like adding a little kink, wisp, etc. and of course you need to control the growth with maps. BTW I'm tweaking them a bit more now JohnnyRaptor : Yeah it'S long process, and on and off on it, sometimes 3 mounths off then I come back at it, but it's long doing an actor.. replicating someone without having the person beside me Next character, will be probably a women face.. of a nobody girl will be muchhh faster and easier to do haha. Playing around again, added a rim light kind.. wich one you prefer, more contrasted or less ? The uncontrasted one is almost untouch from the direct output, except a brigthness on it ( and of course dof etc)

Personally I prefer him against a cooler/more neutral background. The one that had some blurred out background detail worked well as the flat colours for me make it look as though he's posing for a passport photo. I also find the highlight in his left...

hey thank,s guys I appreciate it an other lighting, and I played with the contrast and saturation in photoshop, it was lit with a bluish tinted light... How do you find it? I think I prefer this lighting( I flushed the hdri and added lights instead), I'm making some little change and will post an other render maybe tomorrow

Hi guys long time no post Here's an update on my craig, the last week I returned on it, tweaked a few things like the hairs, etc. and a new lighting. I did not work on it for months I was tired of seeing it haha, meanwhile I did a black head guy that I can't post for now but I will as soon as I can, and I just started a women nobody face... it's a breeze to do compared to do a celebrity So here's are 3 slightly different light set up, let me know wich one you prefer, and also any idea for a nice bg ? FORGET ABOUT THE CLOTH they are still dummy for now as you can see.. I want to finish the lighting and all and will do the cloths after. the one with the bg is the latest one as you can see.. EDIT : By the way ,the compression is removing a LOT of details, the final one I will upload it differently..

Hey guys this thread is not dead! Craig is back ! haha I took a needed brake of it for a while.. after having so much annoying and time lost on hair and fur pure crap in 3dsmax...(yes it was hair and fur not hairfarm on the older renders) I had bug like, when rendering the hairs as geometry, the shader was not changing on the hairs..even if I changed it, and it was rendering way too much dark, a lot of problems with the shading cause of this.. and sometimes hairs disapears for no reason.. and you can't have a preditable result with that crap.. Cannot achieve something realisitic out of it.. the hairs generation is extremely crappy.. like 10 hairs really close.. then a big hole .. what a P.O.S. ... ok, my frustration is out now haha. Other problems I have is a silly bug with Vray sss scatter group when I do something..special let's say haha but I need to it for better..everything.. anyway, the latest is the less problematic of all, I will just merge in a new scene and it should be good. SO , I redid all the hairs,eyebrows...anything that is hair with HAIRFARM! And now, no more problems it was quite hard though to get that hair cut.. I had experimented new ways of working with the hairmesh brush, adding gravity modifier abusively, with push out, with cluster, kink, etc all controlled by maps.. but at least it's better then what I got with hair and fur.. and especially on the side, I'll post a side render once it's rendered, let's say tomorrow. hairs are still not finish though and already a bit more improved then now but it's close to completion. I'll add a bit more facial hairs, finish to do final tweak on the eyebrows etc. And after the cloths, of course and some minor tweak here and there.. and I rigged the head quickly so I can turn it a bit to make it less static, etc. so here's an update guys, hope you like it. It's not the best lighting though, 2 point lights, that create strong highlights but hey, it's to see well the hairs here so it's ok haha.

Nice work again! The only thing I have to say is about the hair, imho it appears to be too thin, especially the stubbles of the beard. I can understand your outrage about hair and fur in max. All the things you mentioned happened to...

Thank's all Next update will be a big one, new eyebrows, with modeling tweak in the eyes, texture tweak, etc. So for now, I just tweaked a bit more the skin shader and here's another lighting, with a blue light on the side, a region render mostly to check the lacrymal liquid in action.

Thank's all Here's an update.. lots of things to tweak.. eyebrows not finished, side of the hairs tamps need to be less, will add later facial hairs, little beard, will do proper cloth,etc.. but at least it's moving forward So here's a hdri test, with the kitchen classic map and a direct light in his face, some color tweak in photoshop and a faked depht of field..

Hey thank's a lot all Rikk The Gaijin : Thank's man , your last work is really good I did not know that octane was able to do skin, is it a skin shader or a mixed sss layer that you build? So , Here's a first test with hair, It's just an experimental test, I'm did with hairfarm hairmesh Brush, I may do an other version with hairmesh extrude.. or just use it to enhance some area I will see. I also wanted to test my custom made Hair shader. No gi so it's why the shadow are a bit harsh, better lighting later Eyebrow coming soon

Here's alittle upgrade, upgraded a bit more the diffuse, added a reflection (will be tweaked more )map, sss weight map and here's a 3 points light setup, it's flattening a bit the volume but it was more for seeing the diffuse then anything else Everything is still big wip, and the cloths are just dummy's for now..

Thank's all for the kind words I appreciate it Took a break of it for a week.. I did started the texturing process, at least only the diffuse for now. I would say it's half way done, 50%, I need to tweak a lot more the eyes region( need to install mudbox to paint on the model.. in photoshop it's hard to place things where you want them, especially around the eyes!..) I need also to add lots of small details like black point, acnea, irritations etc. etc.. I'm struggling a bit with his true skin color and eyes color.. look different on each pics lol. And for his skin, I feel like they used some tan solution on him for Casino, to gave him a nice golden tan, but I'm not sure his true skin color is that yellow.. on other pics look more normal skin tone.. anyone knows the answer? The lacrymal gland will be redone, it's still the old fugly one, and I added quickly a liquid around the eyes, it will be better redone too, even the eyes socket is not finished, do not fit perfectly the eyes etc, I will do that later, etc. So my base scene is in Vray, but I did a quick convertion over Mentalray to compare with Vray and it look quite good.. but so much details wiped out cause of that crappy lightmap.. can't wait for the next sss2, it will be light mp free and layerable, so I will be able to build it as I want :P let's say 2 layers of reflection (no spec..) will have control over the reflection bump etc.. And in the light of some test render with the diffuse texture, I will have to redo a pass over sculpt for some details to come out more, etc, I will post later some Vray render for now it's Mentalray.

thank's all, here's an update, I updated the eyes, made completely new one with a new texture wich I add some touch up by hand in photoshop to match more Craig's eyes ( more tweak to come in this) and tweaked some more the modeling of the face and eyes surronding.

  • WOW!!! I could tell just by the thumbnail of the blue eyes that it was him. This is just perfect!!!! You captured him spot on!! Who needs stuntmen anymore when you can create this????

So here's an update on the ears, it was true they had less attention then the rest so I upgraded them I did some improvement overall, I may tweak some little thing againt and adding some more subtil tension expressions wrinkles. I also worked a bit on the skin shader, found a way to minimise the red bleeding occuring near angular surface, like where the lips meet, seem to work ok. So here's some screen shot of the details done in Zbrush So here's an update on the ears, it was true they had less attention then the rest so I upgraded them I did some improvement overall, I may tweak some little thing againt and adding some more subtil tension expressions wrinkles.
