Let's familiarize ourselves a little better with ZRemesher's DetectEdges functionality. In this Lesson example, we'll take a gear model that has a triangulated mesh with no PolyGroups or no mesh ID, but has edges to help utilize the DetectEdges function. Once DetectEdges is activated, we can convert our mesh to quad based geometry, create PolyGroups, and most importantly retain our clean or hard edges. This function can assist with future mesh editing including Dividing and sculpting or features that utilize PolyGroups.

Here are some images of the final month of the robots I created for the Instagram Sketch Challenge in the Grey Resin. Each of the robots were created entirely in ZBrush then printed out on the Formlabs Form2 Machine. I will post some more images of the models after they have had a light coat of Grey Primer as well. -Joseph

@MealeaYing: Yeah the planning aspect is something I attempt to do at the start; it doesn't always go as planned thou :) If I am just going to do something for rendering I can end up modeling sloppier, use camera angles to cheat things, and not worry about watertight meshes. The Robots on this thread where I was using surface noise would never be able to be printed; and I would basically need to start over on them if they ever needed to be printed. @slothkins: Working on reprinting the first 16 in the Grey Resin then I will be creating images of all of them together. I probably won't start the image process till next week; gonna take a break and go to sleep earlier this week since March is finally over :) Here are the final robots for the month! -Joseph

@keridan: Thanks for the kind words! Glad to hear the information is of value :) Here are the next five; same process as in the image tutorial. All robots are printed at 33.1mm/1.5in in the longest dimension. They take roughly 4-5 hours at the highest resolution on the Form2. -Joseph

@slothkins, @MealeaYing: Here is a quick image breakdown of the process :) The main thing for 3D Printing is to make sure any intersecting geometry is solid and intersecting correctly. Then after the modeling is completed I merge all the subtools together then convert them to a Dynamesh. Dynamesh will weld everything together, get rid of the internal geometry, and generate a watertight mesh. After the Dynameshing is done I just check to make sure that it is indeed solid then I decimate it down to around 250k. After that I just export and print. Shapeways/Sculpteo both check with a lot of scrutiny to make sure that the print doesn't fail (since failure is money and time lost for them.) I find that some of the restrictions often times will print fine on a consumer level printer. -Joseph

It's March again and for some reason I have decided to participate in the March of Robots and create another 31 robots using ZBrush + Keyshot + Printed on the Form2 :) The March of Robots is an Instagram sketch challenge hosted by Dacosta! aka Chocolatesoop (https://www.instagram.com/chocolatesoop/.) The goal is to draw a new robot illustration each day for 31 days (My drawing skills are sub par at best so I go the route of creating the Robots in 3D.) More information on the event can be found here: https://marchofrobots.com/ Each of my submissions to the event are creating inside of ZBrush. I have been sculpting them out in the evenings taking ~ 1.5 hours from start to final color version in Keyshot. After the model is created I send them to Formlab's Preform using the 3D Print Hub (https://pixologic.com/zbrush/downloadcenter/zplugins/) and print them overnight. Printed versions are 38.1mm / 1.5" in the longest dimension. I will be posting these in groups of 5 here on ZBC :) The robots can also be viewed on my Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/piggyson/ March 01 March 02 March 03 March 04 March 05 -Joseph

@Kanga: Thanks! @Polyjunky: Thanks! Gonna have to do one with fur and use your ZRemesher Guide Brush process :) I have been experimenting with taking the images and generating them in Ink. Took the final image and split it into solid colors then ran it through my cnc machine. This gave me wood blocks to print from :) Now I am a 100% novice at this process; been learning a lot just doing these tests (example: the image should be mirrored, and whoa registration... ) Anyhow just sharing a quick example, waiting on a smaller v-bit for making the engraving passes :) Cheers, -Joseph

@Chrisd: Yeah that is a limitation of it for sure. You can manually scale the SubTools to offset this some but it still is just compressing the details as you have noticed :) Now on to some Madness... So I had a vast plan for participating in the InkTober founded by Jake Parker but recuperating from the Summit caused me not start that endeavor. However yesterday I was sent a link to a thread on the Keyshot forums by a guy named Mjb that was experimenting with custom gradient HDR images. (https://www.keyshot.com/forum/index.php?topic=13454.0) So today I experimented with creating some images using this technique with ZBrush and Keyshot. The model was one that I created awhile ago inside of ZBrush for making some pinup models that never were completed ;) All the images below were Modeled in ZBrush sent to Keyshot using the ZBrush to Keyshot Bridge then had some quick gradient/photoshop noise overlays applied. -Joseph

Hi all, Not trying to hijack the thread but I just wanted to share something that I spent some time creating. It's a ZPlugin menu that combines Joseph's two macro packs into one, categorized menu. The main reason why I spent the time to do it was because I use a tool to sync files between hard drives and since Joseph's macros are auto reloaded every-time zbrush is ran, it sees the files as new; which really bothers my OCD style and I also like them a lot better categorized. ...OCD again... Here's an image of the new "Drust Tools" Zplugin menu with both macro packs combined and categorized. The only thing that I changed from his source code was adding 4 different "quick crease" buttons set at different values of 20, 35, 40 and 45 instead of just the one button that he had that defaulted to 45. Everything else is identical to Joseph's original code. You can download it HERE along with the source code for anyone that wants to modify them. All credit goes to Joseph Drust on this since he is the one that originally wrote all of these macros. I simply just put them into a categorized UI in the Zplugin panel for easier use (imo).

@snipex12: The Planes of geometry I am using to create horizon effects. Once then get to Keyshot I apply a 'XRay' material to them to generate atmosphere (depth pass could be used to do this as well.) So I wanted to post images on how I created the Alpha maps for R2. R2 is made up of standard primitives with greeble attached. His body and dome panels were created flat with ZModeled parts. These parts where they placed on the canvas. Once they were in the precise location I did a GrabDoc from the Alpha panel to create the height map. These maps where then applied to a cylinder and hemisphere model to create the body and dome details. Below are images describing the process. Rest of the parts modeled with ZModeler and ZModeler InsertMeshes. I also did a quick test print of him out of PLA (white is a bit hard to read.) I think I am going to work on creating joints for him next then print him out on in resin. -Joseph

Instead of doing another quick sculpt, I started working on an R2 model. Now I know I could have just downloaded one of the countless other R2d2 models you can find online but I wanted to test some Surface Noise workflows and ZModeler Usage so he was a good test case I will be posting some other images of him posed and probably 3D printed soon.. I created a few render passes in Keyshot then did the Photoshop comp with layer masks. Right now he is in multiple parts; I am going to organize him and make him a little more user friendly. -Joseph
