Let's familiarize ourselves a little better with ZRemesher's DetectEdges functionality. In this Lesson example, we'll take a gear model that has a triangulated mesh with no PolyGroups or no mesh ID, but has edges to help utilize the DetectEdges function. Once DetectEdges is activated, we can convert our mesh to quad based geometry, create PolyGroups, and most importantly retain our clean or hard edges. This function can assist with future mesh editing including Dividing and sculpting or features that utilize PolyGroups.

Swarmfall Update v1
I've been stuck at film school for the last year, I tried to get into ZBrush again last year with the halloween challenge. But I never got the time to complete. Anyway, this time I have. In February we're going to show something we've made, a project, anything that got to do movies etc. I figured it was a good time to get deep into ZBrush again, do some sculpting and actually make something out of it. So my idea was to track a 3D character into real footage. The basic idea is an alien from outer space that get lost on Earth. He believes the earth people are trying to help him find a way home. But in reality they're doing something completely different, Project Swarmfall. We'll see some flashbacks of entering the earth, then a couple of shots where he walks down the street and do some poses. And the rest will be headshots, interview style, where he speaks in a foreign language. Since this is the project i pitched for the class, it's no going back, just hard work. I'll try to "spam" as much updates I can, probably each night. This weeks goal. Get the spacesuit and polypainting done. The spacesuit so far (front/back, two crossviewed 3d to show the shape if you're able to do the crossing of your eyes):

A few sculpts/sketches/wips
Long time since I've posted a new post, been lurking around here tho ^_^ I havent had time for much ZBrush the last year, I've been doing a few sketches and stuff. Atm i've actually gotten back to my pink guy with a ball. ( 2-3 posts above ) Trying to finish the animation now, i thought i lost all the files, but thank god for a forgotten backup ^_^ A couple of sketches and ideasI've been working on, a huge creature, the infamous oven ( partly 3dmax, partly zbrush ), a something, a duck i started designing after getting a description from my girlfriend, but I still dont understand exactly what she wants, so it's WIP and probably it'll change form, and last a tall man, anatomy study far from completed:

Face....
Just a new face i've been working on, havent had much time for ZBrush lately or 3D at all. Overall I feel this sculpt is an improvement over my other faces. ( gonna spend a little bit more time and give him an expression and eyebrows ) Rendered with BPR, composed in photoshop. ( and a cross-viewed 3D for closer look :P )

Did 3 busts yesterday. The third was an attempt to sculpt a female, but for some reason getting the female look isnt easy. ATM it looks like a boy ( huge eyes ). The last one was a bust i did a week ago, practicing likeness. Didnt go that well, but he is supposed to be a famous "csi". And there is the finished "lowres" of the latest alien, in 3D, if you know how to cross-view images. Will do a render of him in a proper pose someday.

Definently great work on the 4 head busts, you are totally right, female is way harder to sculpt than men! Keep it going, will definently look at your progress mate! Cheers and happy sculpting, - Kenny :-)

A little bit more work on this guy, just wanna make a little Mental Ray scene with him before I continue with the green creature scene. Detail his pants, give him a gun or something and place him on a mountaintop.

Havent had much time for sculpting, and havent really done much on my green creatures apart from kinda complete the female. Colored things is supposed to be feathers ( alphachannel in 3D Max ). Since I havent sculpted in a while I sat down with a sphere and just created something the last 2 hours. Dynamesh is fun ^_^

Chains and stuff
For some reason I felt there was a couple of things I could do better after posting the last post. Chains instead of leatherstraps and a new wristband. ( I remember spending alot of time on leather straps, and yesterday it just came like that, chains. Annoying ^_^ ) I will do a new better knife aswell, maybe change it with an axe. Did this kind of indian thing on the girls top. Looks like i'm going with big hair for her.

Kygi Update
The male "Kygi" is almost there, need to tweak leatherstraps texture/spec to match quality. Noticed leathercolor on "shoes" is too red, same with wristband ( photoshop and tif makes it fast and easy to fix tho ). Next up is clothes for the female. Will rigg everything when I've completed all the characters and cave. Hopefully try to animate something aswell. The attached images ( finally it works, thanks for the new improved forum ): First, the female "born" out of the male mesh. Second is the soldier, needs anatomy tweaks Third, Kygi male, it seems there is some sort of problem with the normal map on his "chestplate" where the thread is going through ( noticed that now ) Fourth, played around with UDK, the lowres model(s) I exported to UDK was 6600 triangles. I need to do more research in that area, how to make the model suitable for a game environment etc. for some reason normal seams show up very bad ( I guess that's where I need to hide them better? )

Upper body clothing update
I feel pretty much done with the upperhalf now, ( except the clothing around the shoulder needs a bit of "straightening", tubes on back isnt quite there yet ). Gonna rethink his footwear a little, and add more to the skirt before retopology and texturing. KygiUpdate2Thumb.jpg KygiUpdate2.jpg

Small Update
Head is now connected with the mesh, thanks to retopo, some minor detailing and adjustments on the body. Added some "hair". Will continue on clothing, for some reason it seems hard to come up with ideas to clothing, but I'll take a walk inside zbrushcentral for inspiration later. KygiPreUpdateThumb.jpg KygiPreUpdate.jpg

Today I whipped up a body ( only spent about 5-6 hours, amazed by how quickly I pulled it off ) for one of my speedsculpt heads. Started with Zspheres, kinda regret that I didnt put toes on the feet ( much stretching down there, but must retopo anyway to attach head ). I think I'll go for a leather skirt, and some sort of tribeish accessories and a lance. Will do a female edition of this one also, pose em together, not quite sure about where and what yet ^_^ KygiPreThumb.jpg Quick paint to see where i'm heading, tomorrow I will do accessories: KygiPreColor.jpg

since this is a stylized character, I wont say much about it's look but If you're looking to make this character believable, try to tone down the colors. Take some snapshots of Megaminde or any other dreamworks films and try to mach the colors. You'll see...

Speedsculpts
V-Rag: Most of what I've done in 3D Max is interior stuff. The reason I almost gave up working with 3D was because I wasnt able to create a human/character in 3D Max. Then I discovered ZBrush last year. Sounds like a good idea to place a plane with picture of reference in the back, will do it. ( I try to use reference as much as I can these days ) speedthumb.jpg Anyway, felt for doing some speedsculpt/paint after seeing all these great in that lunchcrunch thread, I spendt about 30-45 minutes on each of them out of a polysphere: speed.jpg

Did you work with Maya or 3ds max before zbrush? If yes, have you ever created a character using theses softwares? I'm asking this because I learned a lot of Maya before Zbrush, and it helps you A LOT with anatomy, specially because the use of...

The hair is "hair and fur" that comes with 3D Max, at first it seems very not userfriendy. Kinda like DOS I guess ^_^ But I didnt gave it up, and it's actually pretty good. The only bad thing is that it do need alot of cpu power compared to other hair plugins out there. I wanted to bump the amount of grass to the double, and make each bit of grass a bit tinyer, but couldnt. Or I could, but the grass already took along time to render. Especially from the closeup from the top I see now that I could've colored his scalp with a dark color to mimic shadow, or bumped the amount of hair a little bit. But I guess his about 40 and starting too lose hair, poor guy ( Haircount was 100000, and root 2, tip 0.2 ) EasterHair.jpg

After Work
Here it is, a little late, there's no eastern season now. Named it "After Work". Finally able to render it aswell, since I couldnt with 4GB ram, now I have 12GB. Have been taking a month's break from ZBrush. After a vacation this week i'll be zbrushing as much as possible again. Goal will always be to improve and someday reach top row quality. easternthumb.jpg After Work, 1: EasternFrontFinal800.jpg Crop: EasternFrontFinal800Crop.jpg After Work, 2: EasternTopFinal800.jpg

Island
Been playing Uncharted 1 and 2, gotta say wow, not only does they look great ( considering PS3's old hardware ), but the story and gameplay makes you wanna continue forever. I sketched out this island yesterday with zsketch, had an uncharted moment, and did some paintover, grass etc. Maybe make it a "playable" level in UDK, time to finish easter bunny hands soon: Isthumb.jpg Island1.jpg

Easter Bunny Update
Havent had much time this week. Since I didnt complete it before easter ended, I decided to spend a little bit more time. New shoes already done ( laces needs to be tied ), switching out the gloves with hands I'm about to start scuplting. Adding a cigarette in his left arm prolly. Fingerless gloves was a nice way to avoid doing too much work, but I wont learn anything by doing nothing. Have been doing some hand sculpts ( posted earlier ), time to advance my hands and make separate fingers, and make em as believeable I can at this moment. Ebthumb.jpg Sculpted a tree, and painted some branches, leafs and flowers. I finally understood how to do opacity in 3dmax. I was quite stupid thinking about doing this very quickly, without trying to advance and grow my skills, when my goal is to let each sculpt/project make me a better artist. More Bunny Stuff
Face of bunny guy, and the scene. Maybe sculpt a tree or something that i can place behind the bench? Grass texture has to be adjusted, and unsymmetry for the rock blocks. I'm not sure if i'll do fur or just a velour type of shader for the bunny suit. Plan is to make a "sitting on the bench, tired after work, relax" pose. mannythumb.jpg First time I've tried decimation master, and I loved it. I need to turn up the scattering ( i just noticed how not skin it looks, could be the speculare also? ): BunnyGuyL.jpg BunnyScene.jpg

Well I don't know how much 3D you had done previous to 2010 but to me it seems like you are making HUGE progress in just a year's time. I really like your renders and the fact that most of your work ends up in some sort of composition or story. Perhaps my...

Bunny Costume
Here's the bunny costume completed, except I'm not sure if i'll do laces or velcro on the shoes, maybe velcro to make it less "man". Retopologizing head now. Talking about Ferrell, I guess bustop + bunny costume would fit right into one of his comedies. bunnythumb2.jpg bunny.jpg

Easter Bunny
After struggling with achiving any likeness on my greg sanders ( i dont wanna count hours ), and only minor improvement on my fishburne sculpt, I decided to make a "soldier" face. bunnythumb.jpg Anyway, my little sister asked me if it was the easter bunny. As it's easter, and i feel like taking a few days of from likeness, chillin before getting serious again, and not wanna dig into muscle anatomy and stuff right after spending hours "studying" stuff that's driving me mad, I came up with this. Not sure about the environment, maybe i'll just keep it very very simple: Easter Bunny.jpg

Minor Stokes Update
I felt in love the the clay tube brush, because I feel it's a great brush to build shapes. Good thing it's easy to smooth out without doing much harm to the model. I did some changes in the front view, less wide jaw, more defined cheekbones, shrinked eyeballs, and little tweak around the eye. Will try fix the side view later today. Fishburne's likeness isnt there tho, need to go another round with that bust. stokesthumb2.jpg StokesF.jpg
